Comcast Slashes Prices, Boosts Speeds Following FCC Vote

Just three days after the FCC’s historic vote to repeal the so-called net neutrality rules, Comcast has kept its promise to dramatically drop the price of high-speed internet for customers.

Prices for Comcast’s XFINITY packages dropped an average of 40% overnight, with some plans now a stunning 60% cheaper than before Thursday’s vote. Existing customers should see the discounts take effect in their next complete pay period.

In addition to the new prices, users have been reporting download speeds twice as fast as yesterday, and upload speeds noticeably boosted as well.

“Today we keep our promise of bringing increased investment and digital innovation. It is not the ‘end of the internet’ as many scaremongers had predicted, but the beginning of an era of fast, affordable internet for everyone,” wrote David L. Cohen, Senior Executive Vice President of the Philadelphia-based cable giant, in a release early this morning.

The FCC’s reversal has not actually taken effect yet, and isn’t expected to until early next year, but Cohen said he wants customers to see the benefits of the change immediately. “At Comcast we are beholden to the customer, not the shareholder,” he wrote.

While many customers may welcome the new prices, some will be disappointed that there are now only three websites available to them: XFINITYbook, XFINITYtube, and XFINITYpedia.
